can someone recommend a new DVD player? Maybe w/ DVR?
« on: February 17, 2007, 10:01:46 PM »
I bought my Sony DVD player 7 years ago for $250.
It is now a piece of crap. It keeps freezing up and giving me all kinds of problems.

So i'm in the market for a new one. I don't  have an HD set (maybe next fall) so I assume theres no need to waste money on HD-DVD or BlueRay.

I am also interested in some kind of DVR capability (without having to rent a box from my cable company or get the TiVo Service).  So I can record TV shows when i'm not home - like I used to do in the olden days when I had a VCR.

I haven't started my research yet but thought I'd ask opinions here first.

Thoughts? I don't need super high end - my budget is not in the mood for that :-)

EDIT: I saw THIS and it seems to do exactly what I want. (a little pricey though) - but I like that it has an internal hard drive and "chase play" as well as being a plain ol' DVD player - which, in the end, is the whole reason I'm looking to buy

THanks,
_micah

Sorry Micah, not really up to date on DVR's etc. I'm sure Knuck will be along soon to help.

I'm in the Tivo boat, so I doubt I'll be of any service here.  You really can't beat what they offer.

From what it sounds like... you're going to end up building a PC to interface with your TV.

Get a Tivo with a seperate DVD player.  Problem with getting two devices in one is that you are screwed when either needs repair or you want to upgrade one.  Like the old VCR/DVD players.

I have a Pioneer DV-563A.  Never an issue.  It will play anything.  I just went high end, due to a deal I couldn't say no to with a Sony ES (http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start?ProductSKU=DVPNS3100ES/B), but the prices there are prohibitive in the $450 range new.

Want to purchase my Pioneer?  I will give you a hell of a deal!
