Come back to my laptop to find a black screen.

Restart.

For Realtek sdfldjksafjdk PCI Fast Ethernet Controller v2.13 (blaserjiose)
PXE-E61: Media test failure. check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM

Go to BIOS set up to do a HD test and "No IDE Device" is found.

Take off the hard drive cover, take out HD, put it back in.  Same problems. 

There's a mechanical whirring and dropping kind of noise coming from the general HD area.

I've done a little bit of research...and I've come to the conclusion that my HD is fubared, but you know, I can have a little hope.  Anyone have suggestions?

yurp.  I wasn't a bawling mess like people normally are when their computer stops working.  I am however going through some withdrawal symptoms.

Sounds like a slow spindle motor?  I've actually managed to accumulate  a good deal of music for the short time I had my new hard drive, and that definitely did not get backed up.  Of course, the kicker was I was working on an assignment that was due at 5, hit save, and suddenly I got the BSOD.

Currently, I'm running a BackTrack off a live CD with my HD removed so that I can at least do the research I need to do and check my mail without having to go down to a cluster.
